USS George Washington Carver SSBN-656 patch

USS George Washington Carver SSBN-656 Patch — United States Navy Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine USS George Washington Carver (SSBN-656) Embroidered Patch

USS George Washington Carver SSBN-656 — the scientist's submarine.

USS George Washington Carver (SSBN-656) was a Benjamin Franklin-class fleet ballistic missile submarine named after the pioneering African American scientist and inventor George Washington Carver, whose agricultural research transformed Southern farming and earned him international recognition. The submarine carried Poseidon and later Trident I submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

SSBN-656 conducted strategic deterrent patrols throughout the Cold War, operating in near-total secrecy beneath the world's oceans. The submarine's Blue and Gold crews maintained continuous deterrent readiness, ensuring that America's nuclear response capability remained intact regardless of what happened on the surface. Naming a nuclear ballistic missile submarine after George Washington Carver — a man devoted to peaceful scientific advancement — created an ironic but powerful connection: the ultimate weapon of mass destruction named after a man who devoted his life to creation, not destruction. The paradox captured the essence of nuclear deterrence itself — weapons built to ensure they would never be used. SSBN-656 served faithfully until her decommissioning.

This patch honors SSBN-656's deterrent service.

Perfect For: USS George Washington Carver SSBN-656 veterans, Cold War submarine historians, ballistic missile submarine collectors, and nuclear deterrence heritage patch enthusiasts.
